1. Aims & Statement of Intent

This policy aims to create a safe, inclusive, and respectful environment for all students, staff, and community members at Miftah An-Nur Islamic International School. We are committed to ensuring that every individual is treated with dignity and respect, free from any form of bullying, harassment, or discrimination. The policy intends to:
  • Promote a school culture based on mutual respect, kindness, and understanding.
  • Prevent bullying in all its forms, including physical, verbal, emotional, and cyberbullying.
  • Equip students with the skills and strategies to handle bullying situations.
  • Support victims of bullying and implement corrective actions for those whobully.

2. Scope

This policy applies to all students, staff, parents, and community members associated with Miftah An-Nur.
It covers:
  • Bullying that takes place on school premises, during school activities, and while students are travelling to or from school.
  • Bullying that occurs online or via social media when it impacts the school environment or students’ well-being
  • Incidents of bullying that occur between students or involve staff members.
This policy also acknowledges the need for a culturally sensitive approach, recognising the diverse backgrounds and experiences of the school’s international community.

3. Definitions

Bullying - The repetitive, intentional hurting of one person or group by another person or group, where the relationship involves an imbalance of power. Bullying can be physical, verbal or psychological. It can happen face-to-face or online.” (Anti-Bullying Alliance)

4. Processes and Practices

4.1 Prevention and Education
Miftah An-Nur will integrate anti-bullying education into the curriculum and daily school activities to raise awareness. This includes:
  • Classroom discussions, role-playing, workshops and assemblies on respect, empathy, and conflict resolution using Kelso’s Choices (Appendix 1).
  • Training for staff and parents on identifying and handling bullying behaviour.
  • Promoting a culture of peer support through student-led initiatives and mentorship programs.
4.2.Reporting and Investigation:
  • Any student or parent who witnesses or experiences bullying should report the incident to a staff member.
  • All reports of bullying will be taken seriously and investigated promptly. Investigations will involve interviews with relevant parties, and efforts will be made to maintain confidentiality and fairness throughout the process.
4.3 Response and Intervention
  • Support for Victims: Immediate support will be provided to victims of bullying, including counselling, peer support, or referrals to external services if necessary.
  • Corrective Actions: Appropriate disciplinary actions will be taken against those found responsible for bullying. This may include mediation, behavioural intervention plans, suspension, or expulsion, depending on the severity of the incident.
  • Follow-Up: Regular follow-ups will be conducted to ensure the victim's safety and well-being and assess the effectiveness of interventions.

5. Responsibilities

The Board of Governors will:
  • Read and ratify this policy and ensure that the school complies with all relevant legislation;
  • Support the SLT in the dissemination and application of this policy.
The School Leadership will:
  • Implement and review this policy regularly.
  • Ensure that the policy is communicated to all stakeholders.
  • Provide training and resources to staff for effective implementation.
Staff will:
  • Be vigilant and proactive in identifying bullying behaviours.
  • Promote a positive classroom and school environment where bullying is not tolerated.
  • Support students who report bullying and work with leadership to address incidents.
Students will:
  • Treat their peers with respect and refrain from any form of bullying.
  • Report bullying incidents to a trusted adult.
  • Support and stand up for their peers by promoting kindness and inclusion.
Parents/ Guardian will:
  • Encourage their children to act respectfully and report bullying.
  • Support the school’s anti-bullying initiatives.
  • Collaborate with the school to resolve bullying incidents involving their children.
