The Miftah
Way

At Miftah An-Nur we believe that children are an amanah. We embrace wholeheartedly the responsibility that we, in partnerships with parents have towards shaping and developing the pupils entrusted to us into God-conscious adults who understand and fulfill their wider responsibilities.

Our first priority in enabling this to happen is ensuring that your child and your family immediately feel safe, secure and supported as a part of our community as this is the starting point for successful learning. Then using a range of traditional and innovative methods, we develop life-long learners through embedding skills such as critical thinking and creativity.

The Early Years

Our Early Years curriculum is based on current research on early childhood development and ensures that we place children at the heart of everything we do. At Miftah An Nur, we recognise and value play as essential for human development; a right that every child deserves and an amanah that we need to fulfill.

Children build a strong sense of belonging and have a clear identity as soon they become a part of our community with homely, safe and welcoming classroom environments. Our routines and rituals such as morning dhikr, circle times, saying everyday duas together and check outs to form a strong sense of unity.

We want to nurture our children to be autonomous, curious, creative risk takers who have a love for learning. Hence our continuous provision is carefully set up into learning areas that support rich interactions; spaces which promote questioning, discussion, imagination and shared thinking. This enables our children to not just achieve curriculum objectives but follow their interests and pave their own learning journeys.

Teaching and learning is responsive to the needs and interests of the individual children we teach combining enhanced provision, child initiated play and teacher led activities. The role of our educators in Early Years is to observe, support, facilitate, question and challenge children; to provide learning experiences that help children see the wonder and joy in learning.

Primary

At Miftah An-Nur, we believe in teaching Islam in a manner that permeates children’s every day life and learning. As such our primary school curriculum is based on a big idea each half-term; with a link to an ayat from the Quran or a hadith for the children to reflect upon. We believe that it is through these meaningful connections, interwoven in their day to day learning that will begin to shape the ‘God-conscious and thriving global citizens’ we want from our vision.

Each year group then has their own theme to explore within this, combining skills and knowledge from a variety of topics including English, Science, Geography, History, Art, Design & Technology. Other subjects link where possible but are mostly taught discreetly.  This approach allows pupils to explore themes through different lenses and enables all pupils to find a way to thrive within the theme they are learning about. We have carefully mapped our skills progression in each subject to ensure that pupils are building on their skills across subjects each year but are also being given the opportunity to learn about a wide range of topics.

Wherever possible, our curriculum reflects our Bruneian context including the exploration of the beautiful island of Borneo that we inhabit. Our themes are carefully chosen to support our curriculum aims of enabling pupils to gain an understanding of the different cultures around them, develop a sense of pride in their own history through themes such as the Early Islamic Civilisations as well as develop critical thinking through challenging historical events such as the Impact of the British Empire.

At Miftah An-Nur, we believe that high quality children’s texts are a vehicle through which learning takes place and so our key reading spine in English has been curated to take into account books that will not only fit our themes and big ideas but to also support pupils in developing the rich language, contextual understanding and comprehension skills they need to access the curriculum.

Secondary

Our secondary school continues to provide a holistic education that emphasises both academic excellence and character development. The secondary program is designed to challenge and engage our students, while also providing a nurturing environment that supports their personal growth and development.

The subject offered in secondary builds upon the skills attained in primary, deepening their knowledge in each subject area led by subject specialist teachers, equipping our students with the skills they need to succeed in their future passions.

We believe that education is not just about acquiring knowledge but also about developing a deeper understanding of the world around us and our place in it. We strive to instill in our students a love of learning and a desire to make a positive difference in their communities.

In addition, we place a strong emphasis on character and instill in our students a deep understanding of Islamic values and principles. We believe that by nurturing their character and instilling in them a love for Allah and His Messenger, we are preparing our students to become sincere and compassionate global citizens.
